Portsmouth Guildhall

The Guildhall dates from 1890. Although it was badly damaged during WW2 and extensively rebuilt, the grand exterior is largely the same but with some of the Victorian ornateness gone. The huge building houses the city’s premiere entertainment venue, as well as the Council chamber, and many groups, services and local businesses.

It plays host to comedy, bands, orchestras and exhibitions – there is almost always something on. Based in the city centre, the Guildhall is a short taxi ride away, and is well worth a visit during the day too, when you can enjoy lunch in the only cafe we’ve ever found with a grand piano in the middle of it.

It's worth look at the history section of the Guildhall website, as they show plenty of pictures of ticket stubs for shows held there. They include appearances from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Johnny Cash, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd, to name but a few! A 1972 ticket for the stalls to see a certain Elton John would have set you back all of 50p.

All the stars seem to have passed through the doors of the Portsmouth guildhall at some point, and it still hosts big concerts of all types.
